CD violin 2009

The 3-CD box set of the 2009 Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition goes on sale on 6 June 2009.

The new box set contains a feast of orchestral music, with no fewer than four concertos! These include, of course, Tchaikovsky’s superb concerto as played by the first laureate, Ray Chen; the set also presents the Belgian violinist Lorenzo Gatto’s brilliant performance of Paganini’s First Concerto and Ilian Gârnet in Shostakovich’s First Concerto – all three accompanied by the National Orchestra of Belgium, conducted by Gilbert Varga. It also offers an opportunity to relive the purity of Kim Suyoen’s interpretation of Mozart’s Fourth Concerto in the semi-final, with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, conducted by Paul Goodwin.

This year’s Competition also thrilled us with some magical moments of chamber music, both in the final and in the semi-final. The atmosphere of those occasions is now preserved on disc, with sonatas by Beethoven, Debussy, and Ysaÿe, as well as Yoon Soyoung’s stunning bravura performance of the Tartini/Kreisler “Devil’s Trill” sonata.

The box set closes with two contemporary works: the compulsory work in the semi-finals (Claude Ledoux’s V…), as performed by Ray Chen, and Cho Eun-Hwa’s colourful Agens (the compulsory work in the final), as interpreted by Nikita Borisoglebsky.

All the emotion of the 2009 Competition can now be rediscovered in this 3-CD box set!

BONUS CD SPECIAL OFFER EXTENDED (FOR AS LONG AS STOCKS LAST)

Free when you buy the 3-CD box set, this year’s bonus CD focuses on the music of the 20th century, including George Enescu’s Third Sonata, performed by Lorenzo Gatto – who not only came second in the competition, but also won the Musiq3 Jacques Stehman audience prize – and Stravinsky’s Divertimento, played by Vineta Sareika. It also features the Chinese violinist Chen Jiafeng in the five miniature masterpieces of Prokofiev’s Mélodies. The bonus disc concludes with Schnittke’s spectacular A Paganini for solo violin, brilliantly performed by Choi Ye-Eun. All in all, an attractive combination of discoveries and major works of the violin repertoire of the last century.
